The City of Sanford, ADW Architects, and Carolina Commercial Contractors broke ground on the Sanford Fire Department’s newest fire station on August 29.
The station, which will be the City’s fourth, is the first new municipal station since 1992. Located on Colon Road, the station will allow the Sanford Fire Department to quickly respond to emergencies in all areas of our growing city.
The groundbreaking ceremony included remarks from representatives from the offices of Senator Thom Tillis, Senator Ted Budd, and Representative Richard Hudson about the importance of public safety to a strong and thriving community. Rep. John Sauls was also in attendance.
“This is an exciting time for the City of Sanford and the Sanford Fire Department,” says Fire Chief Matt Arnold. “This new station is a visual representation of the growth we are experiencing, and will ensure our ability to accomplish our goal of rapid and effective service to our residents.”

Fire Station #5 is critical to the city’s overall vision and will ensure Sanford can grow sustainably for many years to come,” says Mayor Rebecca Wyhof Salmon. “I am proud of the work our staff and Council have done to make this station a reality.”
Construction on the station is underway and is anticipated for completion in the fall of 2024. The City will need to hire 21 additional firefighters to be fully staffed.
