The City of Sanford and NC Cooperative Extension, in conjunction with Downtown Sanford, Inc., are excited to announce they will break ground on the Pilgrim’s Sanford Agricultural Marketplace on Thursday, November 21 at 2:30 p.m.
The groundbreaking is the first step in transforming the area between Downtown and Weatherspoon Street into what will be known as the Sanford Central Green, envisioned as an innovative community green space that connects Downtown and East Sanford to City Hall.
“The marketplace will serve as a cultural epicenter and usher in the next wave of revitalization, allowing us to preserve Sanford’s rich history while investing in its future,” says Mayor Rebecca Salmon.
The project has received generous funding from both public and private partners. Sources include the Ruby and Ernest McSwain Worthy Lands Trust, the Rural Transformation Grant Fund, the Pilgrim’s Hometown Strong Grant, the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund, and Lee County Farm Bureau.
“Breaking ground on the marketplace means we are closer to having a central location to celebrate history, honor diversity, and improve community infrastructure through food and fellowship,” says Bill Stone, Lee County Director for the NC Cooperative Extension.
“We are committed to working together for the greater good,” says Kelli Laudate, Executive Director for Downtown Sanford, Inc. “As we plan and prepare for growth, bringing an agricultural hub to Downtown is the perfect way to showcase Sanford and create a space that can adapt to future needs.”
The groundbreaking will be held at the site of the marketplace, which is the corner of Charlotte Avenue and First Street. The public is welcome to attend.
