The City of Sanford’s award-winning National Night Out program has been cancelled for 2020, due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
National Night Out is typically held on the first Tuesday of August. Earlier this year, the City of Sanford opted to reschedule its event for the first Tuesday of October, based on guidance from the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).
Based on new NATW guidance and following best practices from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Department of Health and Human Services, Sanford City Council voted at its Sept. 2 meeting that the safest option for staff and residents is to cancel the event for this year.
“Sanford shines during National Night Out because we are a loving, caring community of people who like to live, work, and play together – and who look out for one another,” says Mayor Chet Mann. “Cancelling this year is another example of how we take care of each other, especially during hard times.”
Sanford’s program has consistently placed in the top 3 NNO programs in the nation and placed first in 2017.
