House Bill 1160, which the North Carolina General Assembly enacted in July 1999, requires that municipalities, animal operations, industries, and others who operate waste handling systems issue a public notice when untreated wastewater of 15,000 gallons or more enters surface waters.
In accordance with the regulation, the following public notice has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county:
On October 11, 2018, the City of Sanford experienced discharges of untreated wastewater from manhole 1887 located on Market Street at Hickory Avenue. The discharge was caused by the severe rain conditions associated with Hurricane Michael.
An estimated amount of 1,050 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged and reached Little Buffalo Creek. This site will be raked and limed according to State of North Carolina guidance.
The Division of Water Quality was notified of the event on October 12, 2018 and is reviewing the matter.
