[ARCHIVED] Message from Mayor Rebecca Salmon

Message from the Mayor

This communication from Mayor Rebecca Salmon in response to the Makepeace Apartments fire on Friday, August 30.

On behalf of the City of Sanford, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the first responders who launched into action this morning when a fire erupted from the Makepeace Apartments.

From the off-duty firefighter who called 9-1-1 to the telecommunicators and EMS to our amazing local firefighters -- this was a team effort and lives were saved. Thank you isn't enough, but we extend it nonetheless to the first response team:

  • Sanford Fire Department
  • Pocket Fire Department
  • Northview Fire Department
  • Tramway Fire Department
  • First Health EMS
  • Sanford Police Department
  • Sanford Public Works

As we know too well, a fire like the one this morning is devastating to the people who have to flee their homes. In Sanford, we give and give freely. It is no surprise that the displaced tenants have been wrapped in support today.

Another thank you goes out to the nonprofit and faith organizations and local businesses that have spent the day providing support to the residents and will continue to do so for as long as they are needed, including:

  • Bread of Life Ministries
  • Christians United Outreach Center
  • City of Sanford Community Development
  • Downtown Sanford
  • H3 Street Ministry
  • Harris Insurance
  • High Cotton Couture
  • Lee County Animal Shelter
  • Lee County Emergency Management
  • Lee County Parks & Recreation
  • Lee County Senior Services/COLTS
  • Lee County Social Services
  • Life Springs Church
  • S3 Housing Connect partners
  • St Luke ARK Ministry
  • The Red Cross
  • The Salvation Army

Many of us want to help in times of tragedy. We recommend reaching out to the organizations shared here as they are heavily involved and know the needs.

Thank you, truly, to all involved -- including those who showed up to lend a hand and a shoulder. Your swift and caring responses have made all the difference.

It's during times like these that we see the very best in people, and you have certainly exemplified that.

Sanford is an amazing community and I am so proud of our team.
