[ARCHIVED] City to Plant 6 Trees for Arbor Day

Arbor Day

The City of Sanford Appearance Commission will plant six trees in Kiwanis Family Park for Arbor Day on Tuesday, October 25 at 10:00 a.m.

The purpose of Arbor Day is to increase awareness of the importance of trees to our community and environment, as well as to enhance our sense of place.

Holding an Arbor Day tree planting is a key component of Sanford’s Tree City USA designation, which it first earned in 2013. To maintain the recognition, the Appearance Commission “researches and recommends trees for public areas to enhance Sanford’s appearance and preserve the city’s tree canopy,” says Liz Whitmore, planner with the City of Sanford.

The Commission will plant five Willow Oak trees and one Flame Thrower Redbud tree. The oaks were chosen to provide more shade at the park. The Redbud is an ornamental variety that will add color throughout the year.

“The flame thrower variety was created at N.C. State and won first place at the Royal Horticulture Society's Chelsea Flower Show,” Whitmore notes.

The public is invited to attend the planting. The event is rain or shine.
