Home Occupations

General Information

   ○ Home occupation permits are intended to allow residents to use their homes to operate certain businesses from their residence so long as they
      maintain the residential character of their neighborhood.
   ○ It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm with his or her Homeowners Association (HOA) or property management company regarding whether their
      Covenants & Restricts prohibit home occupations.
   ○ Standards and regulations regarding home occupations can be found in §5.16 of the Unified Development Ordinance.

Submittal Requirements

   ○ A completed Home Occupation Registration Application
   ○ A floor plan of your residence showing the area of your home utilized for the home occupation (a maximum of 25% or your home's gross floor area is
      permitted for the a home occupation).
   ○ There are no fees for a home occupation permit.
   ○ Applications and floor plans can be submitted online using the CSS Self-Service Portal.

Exempt Home Occupations:

   ○ Artists, sculptors, composers not selling their artistic product to the public on the premises.
   ○ Craft work, such as jewelry-making and pottery, with no sales on the premises.
   ○ Telephone answering and message services.

Permitted Home Occupations that Require a Permit:

   ○ Accounting, tax, bookkeeping, and payroll services
   ○ Baking and cooking
   ○ Catering 
   ○ Childcare
   ○ Computer repair training
   ○ Computer systems design and related services
   ○ Drafting services
   ○ Engineering, architecture, and landscape architecture
   ○ Financial planning and investment services
   ○ Fine arts studio (creation of individual works only, no mass productions)
   ○ Florist
   ○ Hair salon, barbering, hairdressing, and other personal care services
   ○ Information and data processing services
   ○ Insurance sales
   ○ Interior decoration (no studio permitted)
   ○ Legal services
   ○ Mail order business (order taking only; no stock in trade)
   ○ Musical instruction, voice or instrument
   ○ Musical instrument tuning and repair
   ○ Offices for professional, scientistic, technical services, or administrative services
   ○ Photographic services
   ○ Professional services including the practice of law
   ○ Real estates services and appraisal
   ○ Tailoring (dressmaking, alterations, etc.) services
   ○ Teaching of crafts and incidental sale of supplies to students
   ○ Tutoring
   ○ Any other customary home occupation not listed above provided that it shall conform to the standards of §5.16
