Appearance Commission Seeks Artists for Public Art Project

Municipal News & Announcements Posted on March 14, 2025

The Sanford Appearance Commission is accepting proposals from artists interested in painting large fiberglass bee sculptures to commemorate Sanford’s designation as a Bee City USA.

The sculpture initiative will install painted bees throughout the city, enhancing the vibrancy of Downtown Sanford and other key locations. Private donations have sponsored the sculptures.

For this first wave of installations, four artists will be selected. Each artist will paint one bee sculpture. If selected, the artist will be responsible for picking up the fiberglass bee in May and returning it completed by the first week of August.

Artists must submit proposals by April 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

For more information or to submit a proposal, contact Liz Whitmore at 919-718-4657 ext. 5393 or liz.whitmore@sanfordnc.net.

Read the full request for proposal and see submittal requirements on our website.

Sponsor a Bee Sculpture

Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this project. Each bee sculpture costs $3,500, which includes purchase of the sculpture, shipping, storage, artist fee, clear coating, and installation.

Donations of any amount are welcome. Donations of $1,000+ qualify to be listed on plaques installed at the sculptures. Those who sponsor a full bee ($3,500) will have the opportunity to consult with staff and the artist on the bee design, and only that donor's name will be listed on the plaque.

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. See more information here.

About Bee City USA

In April 2023, the City of Sanford was named an official Bee City USA, a designation given to cities, towns, and counties that have committed to the conservation of native pollinators.

The City of Sanford has demonstrated its commitment to local pollinators by establishing three hives at the Sanford Municipal Center, which are maintained by the Sanford Parks Department with the guidance of award-winning Master Beekeeper Jody Moore.

Visit our website for more information about Sanford’s efforts to honor the vital role pollinators play in keeping our community healthy and thriving.
