City Awarded $230K Grant to Improve Walter McNeil Jr. Park

Municipal News & Announcements Posted on September 05, 2024

The City of Sanford has been awarded $232,381 by the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) to enhance Walter McNeil Jr. Park.

The City applied for a PARTF grant after approving a Parks Master Plan and engaging in a comprehensive public feedback process that identified Walter McNeil Jr. Park as the ideal location for improvements.

The funding will allow the City to update the park with amenities that appeal to a wide range of ages and recreational preferences. Enhancements include paved parking and a paved trail, a picnic shelter, a rain garden, and a horseshoe pitch in addition to a playground.

While the park is getting an uplift, the significance of its name won’t be left in the past. Late Councilman Walter McNeil Jr.’s historic contribution to Sanford will be reinforced at the park with signage and other markers honoring his legacy.

“Enhancing Walter McNeil Jr. Park plays a vital role in elevating the quality of life for residents in the neighborhood while also contributing to the ongoing growth and improvement of our park system,” says Mayor Rebecca Salmon.

“As Sanford grows, we will continue investing in our parks to provide the high quality recreational experiences our residents want,” Salmon says.

Execution of the grant contract is scheduled for early November 2024. A timeline for park improvements will follow.
