At-Large Council member Linda Rhodes was recognized as a Main Street Champion by Downtown Sanford, Inc. (DSI) at the N.C. Main Street conference earlier this month.
Main Street Champions are selected based on their significant contributions to downtown revitalization and community building. Rhodes was chosen for her unwavering dedication to the growth and sustainability of Downtown Sanford, according to a release from Downtown Sanford, Inc.
Rhodes’ nomination stated, in part: “Linda Kelly Rhodes is a tireless advocate for the City of Sanford, Downtown Sanford, Incorporated, and the residents of the community. Her dedication to revitalizing the heart of the city is truly undeniable.”
“Linda’s unwavering enthusiasm and collaborative spirit have been key in creating a thriving downtown environment,” says DSI board chair Sharon Spence. “She inspires others to get involved and is a true champion for Sanford’s future.”
DSI board members first announced the nomination at the February 14, 2025, meeting of the Sanford City Council. The announcement was made official at the conference on March 13, 2025.
In response to learning she had been selected as a Champion, Rhodes noted that the distinction could be given to each member of Sanford City Council. “I’m proud of being a member of this group, I’m proud of the way we work together, and I’m proud of downtown Sanford,” she said.
Rhodes was one of 47 champions honored at the conference this year. Past champions from the City of Sanford include former mayor Chet Mann, City planner Liz Whitmore, and the Sanford Public Works Department.
