‘Safe Streets for All’ Action Plan Ready for Review

Municipal News & Announcements Posted on November 19, 2025

Following focused analysis and public input on roadway safety in Sanford, Broadway, and Lee County, the ‘Safe Streets for All’ Safety Action Plan for Lee County is closer to adoption.

The Safety Action Plan is a joint effort by Lee County, the City of Sanford, the Town of Broadway, and the Central Pines Regional Council to reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries across the region. The effort is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program.

The plan aims to reduce the rate of fatal and serious injury crashes by 50 percent over the next 15 years and calls on local policy to focus on safety over speed when making decisions for land use, transportation planning, and roadway operations.

To accomplish that goal, the plan identifies highest-priority corridors, outlines countermeasures, and offers strategies to increase safety that address infrastructure, design, and funding.

Bringing the plan to life will rely on partnership and smart investment. However, with the plan in place, the region is better positioned to take advantage of funding opportunities that will help implement the safety measures without burdening local budgets.

The plan has been published for review. Sanford/Lee County Planning Department will present it to the Lee County Board of Commissioners, Sanford City Council, and Broadway Town Commissioners next month.

The public is encouraged to read the plan and submit any feedback to by December 5, 2025, to Sanford/Lee County Long Range Planner David Montgomery at 919-718-4657 x5392 or via email
