Proclamation Requests

Official proclamations and letters of recognition from Sanford Mayor Rebecca Wyhof Salmon are issued to honor a person or an event that reflects positively upon our City.

Proclamations

Proclamations must have a positive citywide impact and must be requested by or on behalf of a Sanford resident or organization.

Proclamations may be issued for the following reasons:

  • Recognition of action or service above and beyond the call of duty.
  • Recognition of extraordinary achievement.
  • Supporting actions that improve the quality of life of the City of Sanford.
  • Raising public awareness of issues that directly affect the City of Sanford.
  • Recognition of a Sanford resident for one of the following:
    • Retirement -- the person must have been employed with current employer for 25 years or more.
    • Wedding, church, or pastoral anniversary -- the anniversary must be for 25 years or more.
    • Birthday -- the person must be at least 80 years of age. A person will only receive a birthday proclamation once unless they reach 100 years of age.

Proclamations WILL NOT be issued for any of the following:

  • Matters that would require taking sides on a political issue.
  • Matters involving issues of personal conviction.
  • Matters involving any particular religion.
  • Any other matters that tend to stir up controversy or unrest.
  • Commercial purposes, such as the opening of a new business, a new service, a new product, or a new professional service, whether directly or indirectly related.

All proclamations should be patterned after the examples given.

Letters of Recognition

Letters of Recognition may be provided for conferences, conventions, seminars, professional celebrations, significant birthdays and/or anniversaries, or initiatives with a proven record of a positive citywide impact. Letters must be requested by or on behalf of a Sanford resident or organization.

Letters of Recognition WILL NOT be provided for any of the following:

  • Political issues or matters of personal conviction.
  • Any other matters that tend to stir up controversy or unrest.

How to Apply

There are two ways to apply for a proclamation: by mail or by online form.

For proclamations: Submit the online form or mail a draft with the exact wording of your proclamation to:

Wording

If you need help with the exact wording, please refer to the provided sample proclamations and letters. If you are asking on behalf of an annual event or national organization, you may be able to obtain a sample proclamation from past event organizers or the organization’s staff.

Once Your Proclamation is Submitted

The draft will be reviewed to ensure that it meets the recommended criteria. All proclamations and letters are subject to editing.

If approved, the requester will receive one signed original copy of the proclamation or letter.

Process, Deadlines, & Mailing

The proclamation or letter will be formatted and then signed by the mayor. It can be picked up at the Sanford Municipal Center or can be sent via postal mail. Please submit the draft at least three weeks prior to the date by which you would like your proclamation or letter to arrive.
