[ARCHIVED] City of Sanford Announces Updates to Coronavirus Response

City Seal

To best protect the public and its employees, the City of Sanford has updated its response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic.

Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and after Gov. Cooper’s ban on large gatherings, the City of Sanford enacted several policies on March 13, including suspending water service disconnections due to non-payment of water bills.

Effective March 18, the City of Sanford adds the following updates to its coronavirus (COVID-19) policies:

  • The City of Sanford has cancelled all meetings of City-appointed boards and commissions indefinitely.

  • The City of Sanford’s municipal parks remain open. Park staff has increased the frequency of bathroom cleanings and disinfecting at Depot Park and Kiwanis Family Park according to best practices established by the CDC. We encourage park visitors to follow hand washing and social distancing guidelines.

  • The Engineering Department will now accept water and sewer tap applications and payment by phone. Residential customers may call 919-777-1122 or 919-777-1155 to initiate the request. The City of Sanford does not install water/sewer taps or cleanouts for any commercial properties.

  • The Planning and Community Development Department is currently open during regular business hours, but asks the public to use phone and email where possible. Departmental updates are as follows:

    • Development approval services are now limited. The department can still accept and process development permits that can be reviewed and approved by staff. However, any development approvals that requires approval by a board (planning board, board of adjustment, governing board) are suspended indefinitely. Contact zoning staff at 919-718-4656 for more information about specific land uses, zoning approvals, and to confirm whether a project can move forward.

    • Building Inspections operations are still active; however, the department encourages that all trade permits (electrical, mechanical, and plumbing) be completed online. For specific questions or more information about building inspections, please contact 919-718-4654 or visit our website.

    • Code Enforcement has established temporary procedures regarding inspecting complaints and potential City code violations. Inspectors will respond to serious life/safety issues, but will take the necessary steps to protect against coronavirus. For all other complaints or inquiries, please call 919-718-4652 x1405.

Planning and Community Development staff and services are otherwise available. Call the department at 919-718-4657 with questions or for more information.

  • The Sanford Fire Department has suspended several programs and amended operations to protect the health and safety of its firefighters and the public, including:

    • Public access to the Sanford Fire Department’s three locations will be limited.

    • All fire and life safety education programs for the public have been suspended until further notice.

    • Child passenger safety seat checks have been suspended until further notice.

    • 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year scheduled maintenance inspections have been suspended. Life safety issues will still be addressed.

    • Fire reports are available via request by calling 919-775-8310 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. This number is posted at each station on the main doors.

    • Smoke detectors are still available and installations can be scheduled.

The City of Sanford continues to rely on guidance from the CDC, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Lee County Health Department to make decisions that are in the best interest of our employees and the public.
