[ARCHIVED] City of Sanford Updates Policies in Response to Coronavirus

City Seal

In response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, the City of Sanford has taken several actions to protect the health and safety of its employees and the public.

On March 10, Governor Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency for North Carolina. The declaration protects consumers from price gouging and provides flexibility and funding for delivery of medical supplies.

Following the State of Emergency declaration and upon recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, we have adopted the following policies:

  • The City of Sanford will suspend water service disconnections due to non-payment of water bills. During this time, we want to ensure all of our utility customers have access to water and wastewater services. We will continue to monitor guidance from public health agencies and provide updates on this policy moving forward.

  • The City of Sanford encourages employees and the public to adhere to virus mitigation guidelines from the CDC to reduce their risk of exposure to COVID-19. These guidelines include hand washing, avoiding public places while sick, and social distancing. Therefore:
    • We encourage all customers to avoid paying bills in person if possible. We offer several alternate payment methods, including by mail, on our website, or by calling 919-775-8215.
    • We have postponed or suspended non-essential meetings or gatherings, including planned public information meetings associated with rezoning requests and the weekly Sanford Citizens’ Academy.
    • Additional hand sanitizer stations have been ordered for all municipal buildings and will be installed soon. Employees are cleaning high traffic areas according to recommendations from the CDC.
    • Access to City facilities may be limited as necessary to protect employees and the public.

We are aware that our response to the COVID-19 outbreak may change quickly depending on the virus’ spread. We will rely on guidance from the CDC, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Lee County Health Department to make decisions that are in the best interest of our employees and the public.
