[ARCHIVED] Golden LEAF Foundation Grants $1.5M to Sanford/Lee County Sewer Extension Project

Golden Leaf Foundation Grant

The City of Sanford and Lee County Government have been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation to extend sewer service to the Raleigh Exec Jetport.

The grant is part of the Golden LEAF Foundation’s Community-Based Grantsmaking Initiative (CBGI), which identifies and supports projects that have the potential to make a significant impact. Specifically, CBGI grants target investments that will lead to economic growth.

The Sanford/Lee County Regional Airport Sewer Extension Project will be a “game changer,” says Sanford Mayor Chet Mann. “With its proximity to the amenitized Central Carolina Enterprise Park and the existing industrial park, this new sewer infrastructure will allow for high-paying, high-quality jobs and enable the type of expansion that Sanford and Lee County have been working together to achieve,” he says.

County leaders first learned about the grant opportunity through the NC Association of County Commissioners in July 2017. The CBGI’s focus on infrastructure improvement and economic development caught Lee County Manager John Crumpton’s attention. “The city and county have been longtime partners at the Raleigh Exec Jetport and when the county learned about the CBGI opportunity last summer, the sewer extension project immediately came to mind as a contender for the grant,” he says.

“The airport has long struggled with sewer capacity and probably missed out on some great projects as a result,” says Carter Keller, Chairman of the Sanford-Lee County Regional Airport Authority. “The access to public sewer provided by funding from the Golden Leaf Foundation will open new opportunities for the airport and surrounding area,” Keller says.

“The partnership between the city and county has made our community stronger and the Golden LEAF Foundation grant is another great example of that partnership at work,” says Lee County Board of Commissioners Chair Amy Dalrymple. “We are confident that the project will increase economic development that will bring greater prosperity to our area benefitting both our city and county residents.”

“We are grateful for the Golden LEAF Foundation’s support as we continue to push for smart economic development in Sanford that will enhance our residents’ quality of life as well as expand our tax base,” Mann says.

Lee County is located in North Carolina’s North Central Prosperity Zone. Other counties competing for Golden LEAF Foundation’s CBGI grant monies in this zone include Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance, Wake, Warren, and Wilson.
