Beautification Maintenance

The beautification division is responsible for maintaining areas around town for the beautification of the City. The division maintains the following areas:

 

US 1 and NC 42 interchanges

 

US 1 and Spring Lane interchanges


US 1 North median divider from city limits approximately two miles south


Valley Road plant bed


Stoneridge Drive plant bed


Palmer Drive median


Carbonton Road median


Sunset Drive small park


Wall Street Median

Areas may be added for maintenance based on the following criteria:

1. Property must be located in the city limits or jurisdiction
2. Property must be city property or on a public right of way
3. Property must be located in an area that does not pose a risk or hazard to employees.
4. Property must conform to all sight-distance regulations
5. Adequate funding and staff are available to maintain property
6. Property must not be entrances to subdivisions or perceived as such

In addition to overseeing the maintenance of all such properties, the city horticulturist makes the final decision for tree removal if a tree is dead, deceased or dying. The horticulturist makes such decisions using the following criteria:

1. Sight observation
2. Cavities in tree
3. Dead limbs
4. History of tree
5. Visible fungus
