Street
Resurfacing
The City's goal is to resurface streets once every
twelve years if funding is available. The average
life of a street is twelve to fifteen years.
Patching
The city is responsible for the maintenance of city
maintained / owned streets. However, when city services
such as water or sewer work requires an excavation
of a state maintained streets, the city will perform
utility patching at the work site. To report a pothole,

Curb & Gutter
Initial installation of curb and gutter on city maintained
streets is at the request and expense of the property
owner. An interested property owner should call our
engineering office at (919) 775-8231 for curb and
gutter specifications. The city provides maintenance
on existing curb and gutter of city maintained / owned
streets as needed where safety is a concern.
Sidewalks
The city does not participate in the cost of new
sidewalk installation. The city will assist an interested
property owner in the identification of a contractor
to install a new sidewalk, or administer a petition
assessment for sidewalk installation when multiple
property owners are requesting the installation of
a new sidewalk. The property owner(s) will be responsible
for the entire cost of a new sidewalk. The city will
maintain all existing sidewalks located in the city
right-of-way where safety is a concern.
Drainage Ditches
The city maintains drainage ditches located in the
city right-of -way to ensure the proper removal of
water from city maintained streets. Good water drainage
prolongs the useful service life of city maintained

Driveway Drainage Pipe
Drainage Pipes and Structures located within the
city right-of-way shall be to the city engineer's
recommendation, city specification and under city
inspection. Call 919-775-8326 for questions about
driveway drainage pipe or to request a driveway drainage
pipe installation cost estimate. The city will install
driveway drainage pipe purchased from the city by
private property owners. Additionally, the city will
maintain driveway drainage pipe located in the city
right-of-way that meets established city specifications:
properly sized reinforced concrete pipe (RCP).
Street Name Markers
The city fabricates, repairs, maintains, and installs
all existing street name markers located within the
city limits of Sanford. Street name markers for new
streets in the city limits must be purchased by the
developer. For city streets that will be accepted
by the City of Sanford, street markers can be purchased
from the city by calling 919-775-8326 for a quote.

Traffic Signals
The city owns and maintains five traffic signals
located at the intersections of Vance and Wicker,
Gulf and Wicker, Steele and Wicker, Oakwood and Bragg,
& Charlotte and Oakwood. To report a malfunctioning
light or crosswalk maintained by the city, call the
Public Works Service Center (919) 775-8247. For maintenance

Street Sweeping
The city sweeps streets with curb and gutter on a
regular basis by scheduled routes as weather permits.
Street Lights
On city maintained streets, the city is coordinating
our efforts with the power companies to enhance street
lights which are being installed at every intersection
and approximately every 150-200 feet on streets, bringing
our system to AASHTO standards. This also includes
decorative lighting. A street light is also required
on a dead-end street that is over 200 feet long and
on all cul-de-sacs. Additionally, the city may have
additional street lights installed if such lighting
is needed in sharp curves that may create a safety
hazard for motorist. To report a light outage, call

Traffic Signs
The city installs and maintains traffic signs on
city maintained streets that meet requirements of
the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUCTD)
and the North Carolina Department of Transportation
(NCDOT). The city removes site distance obstructions,
which are objects that substantially block the sufficient
vision of drivers such as limbs. To avoid sign pollution,
the city only erects traffic signs that are necessary
to provide a safe travel environment for pedestrians,
bicyclist, and motorist. For more information or to

Holiday Decorations
The city installs and removes holiday decorations
in the central business district (Downtown Sanford)
and Jonesboro. Decorations will not be installed earlier
than November 1st and they will be removed by January
15 under normal circumstances.
Parades
In the event of a parade or street closing, a letter
of request and map should be submitted to the street
division for approval 60 days prior to the event date.
Appropriate insurance must be provided to the city
as well. Applications for permits for special events
must be submitted. Forms can be acquired from the
Police Department front desk, (919) 775-8266. The
city will furnish and place signs and barricades for
