The City of Sanford invites Sanford and Lee County residents to participate in the upcoming session of the Sanford Citizens’ Academy.
Since its inception in 2014, 60 local residents have participated in the program. Graduates say they have a better understanding of local government and a strong desire to be engaged in municipal decisions and events.
The upcoming session will run on Tuesday mornings for 12 weeks starting February 6. Each week will feature a different municipal department, including public safety, the municipal golf course, and parks. Some standout sessions include trips to the Raleigh Exec Jetport, Cape Fear River, and Central Carolina Enterprise Park.
“We want graduates to understand all the ins and outs of the City and then share their knowledge with the people around them,” explains Mayor Chet Mann. “Our goal is to make the Academy as informative and interactive as possible – and there’s always more to learn,” he says.
Participants will spend time with head staff in each department and be able to ask their most pressing questions. There will also be a special graduation dinner and recognition.
Enrollment for each session is limited to 10 participants to ensure everyone has a rich, unique experience. Registration will end on February 1 or when spaces are full.
Though the City has previously offered two sessions of the Sanford Citizens’ Academy each year, this will be the only session offered in 2018. Starting with this session, the City will offer the program during the day for even numbered years and at night during odd numbered years.
