Street Banners for Downtown Sanford

14 YEARS or OLDER  •  Deadline: July 24, 2017

Open to all Artists & Graphic Designers in the Sanford Area (Lee, Chatham, Harnett, & Moore Counties)

$300 Top Prize

Banner Initiative

The City of Sanford Public Art Committee (appointed by the Appearance Commission of the City of Sanford) is currently accepting proposals from local artists and graphic designers interested  in designing street banners for Downtown Sanford.  The City is in the process of replacing its street banners on the light poles within the Downtown Sanford Municipal District (see map attached) and needs your help.   This project is one of several public art initiatives aimed at enriching the Downtown Sanford experience for visitors and stakeholders in Downtown.  The Public Art Committee and Board Members of Downtown Sanford Incorporated will review proposals and determine the top three submittals.


Awards will be given to 1st place ($300), 2nd place ($200), and 3rd place ($100) as determined by the Selection Committee.

Project Goals

  1. Beautify public areas in downtown which attract heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  2. Market what Downtown has to offer to both visitors and citizens
  3. Visually promote the benefit of the arts throughout Downtown and the City of Sanford.

About the Project

  • Banners will be W-30” X H-60”
  • Banners will have pockets on the top and bottom ends to slide the poles attached to brackets
  • Artists may choose to reflect the history and architecture of Downtown Sanford
  • Artists may choose to reflect current activities (i.e. Theatre, Shopping, Dining, etc.)
  • Artists may submit more than one banner for consideration.
  • Only Sanford Area artists will be considered.
  • The mural will serve as a visual reminder and should be distinctive through use of design color, font, etc. Only original designs will be considered. Art can be computer generated.
  • The design must be suitable and acceptable for public viewing of all ages.
  • FYI: After fabrication, banners will have slits placed on them to minimize wind damage to the light poles (please see currently installed banners)


The Selection Committee reserves the right to use all of, a portion of, or none of the designs submitted (even award winners) for the actual production of the street banners.  In addition, all submittals will become the property of Downtown Sanford, Inc. and may be used for other promotional and advertising opportunities.


Artists interested in creating a work of public art should submit the following materials by July 24, 2017.

  1. A narrative of the concept for the banner(s).
  2. Contact information
  3. 11X17 illustration of the proposed banner
