[ARCHIVED] City of Sanford Hurricane Dorian Preparation

City Seal

The City of Sanford is preparing for Hurricane Dorian’s imminent arrival on the coast of North Carolina.

City crews are checking and clearing drains throughout the storm water system to help prevent any flood conditions in the aftermath of the storm. The leaf truck is out collecting loose debris that could become a hazard.

Waste Industries has reported that their trucks will operate on a regular schedule for Wednesday and Thursday. They will assess Friday pickups as the storm’s impact becomes clearer. In the event of high winds, residents should remove all trash and recycling carts from the curb and secure them as best they can.

Staff has also been busy checking equipment and verifying that everything is ready to respond during and after the storm, including generators at our lift stations and facilities. Fuel tanks are full and supplies are stocked at both the water and wastewater plants to ensure continued operation.

In the event of a severe impact, firefighters with the Sanford Fire Department will stay on shift as needed. Additionally, extra personnel will stay onsite at the water and wastewater treatment plant and the Public Works Service Center will remain staffed with multiple employees on call.

The City of Sanford will provide recorded updates specific to its delays, closures, water and sewer emergencies, and any other emergencies specific to Sanford though the Customer Service Department at 919-775-8215. Updates will be provided as needed.

The City will also provide updates through our website, TV channel, and social media. We will send updates to traditional media outlets such as local and regional newspapers, TV stations, and radio stations.

For more information, visit our website or call the City Manager’s office at 919-777-1112.
