Starting Tuesday, Aug. 20, the N.C. Department of Transportation will reduce Seventh Street and portions of Charlotte Avenue to two lanes and add bicycle lanes to both streets. Signal lights along affected areas of streets will be replaced with all-way stop signs.
NCDOT will close the inside lanes along Seventh Street on August 20 and the inside lanes on Charlotte Avenue from Seventh Street to Hawkins Avenue on August 21. Traffic will flow uninterrupted in the outside lanes.
Crews will then mill, pave, and mark the affected sections of street with two lanes, a center turning lane, and bicycle lanes in both directions. These will be the first bicycle lanes in the city of Sanford.
All-way stop signs will be installed at the following intersections:
Signal lights at these intersections will flash red for two weeks before being removed.
These permanent traffic changes align with NCDOT’s Complete Streets policy, which directs the department to replace travel lanes with bicycle lanes, sidewalks, or side paths in areas with lower vehicular travel counts.
Called a “road diet,” reducing travel lanes encourages the use of alternative transportation, increases connectivity between neighborhoods, and improves safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The long-term plan for these streets is to add sidewalks and pockets of landscaped medians.
