Council appoints members to serve on the following committees:

ABC Board Operates an ABC System in the City of Sanford in conformance with North Carolina’s uniform system of control over the sale, purchase, transportation, manufacture, consumption, and possession of alcoholic beverages. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:30 A.M. at the ABC Office, 2116 South Horner Boulevard, Sanford. 

Airport Authority- Owns, controls, and operates a regional airport and all lands and operations related to the airport. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 8:00 A.M. at the Raleigh Executive Airport, 700 Rod Sullivan Road, Sanford.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Committee- Conducts hearings at the request of disabled persons who feel the City of Sanford has discriminated against them in providing access to and participation in public facilities, services, activities, and functions. Committee meets on an as-needed basis. 

Appearance Commission- Promotes historic preservation and beautification efforts in the City of Sanford and formulates regulations and policies to promote those goals; makes recommendations to the City Council concerning appearance issues, including landscape and sign regulations and general urban design standards. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 P.M. in the West End Conference Room, City Hall. 

Board of Adjustment- Hears and decides appeals from any review, order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an administrative official charged with enforcement of the City Zoning Ordinance. The Board holds meetings as may be considered necessary by the Board at such times and places as may be designated by the chairperson. 

Fire Committee- City appointed members serve on the Board of Trustees for the Local Firemen's Relief Fund. The Board of Trustees meets rarely but must file a Report of Fire Condition and Financial Statement and Membership to the North Carolina Firemen's Association each year. 

Historic Preservation Commission- Sanford/Lee County Development provides staff support for The Sanford Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). The HPC works to protect Sanford’s architectural heritage by nominating properties and districts to the National Register of Historic Places, and establishing local historic districts where residents desire protection of their neighborhood’s historic resources. Sanford has four National Register Historic Districts: Downtown Sanford, Rosemount McIver Park, Hawkins Avenue, and Lee Avenue. Property owners in National Register Districts are eligible for state and federal tax credits for substantial rehabilitation projects, which are approved in advance by the State Historic Preservation Office. Sanford’s two Local Historic Districts are Downtown Sanford and Rosemount McIver Park. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 P.M. in the West End Conference Room, City Hall.   

Housing Appeals Board- Provides a process whereby owners or occupants of residential structures may appeal decisions of the Building Inspector concerning orders issued for repair or demolition and public health nuisance abatement. The five members and one alternate member of the Board of Adjustment who are appointed by the City Council are designated to serve as the Housing Appeals Board for the Building Inspection jurisdiction of the City in accordance with G.S. 160A-360 and Ordinance No. 1999-30, and amended Ordinance No. 1999-35. Meetings are held as needed. 

Joint Planning Commission- Introduces text amendments and plans in order to provide a smoother process for the separate governmental entities of the county when considering adoption of said amendments and plans. The JPC meets as needed. When they do meet, they generally meet on the second Thursday of the month at 6:00 P.M. in the West End Conference Room, City Hall. 

Joint Environmental Affairs Board- Advisory Board whose purpose is to maintain and improve the quality of the environment in Lee County by: (1)  Advising the local boards on environmental policy; (2) Educating the public and officials about environmental issues; (3) Performing studies on environmental questions; (4) Facilitating citizen participation; (5) Informing the public and local officials about changes in environmental laws and regulations affecting the area and promoting state/county and public/private cooperation and coordination. The Joint EAB will meet at least every other month.

Planning Board- Conducts studies and recommends plans, policies, and ordinances relating to the growth and development of the City; makes recommendations concerning proposed conditional use permits and proposed land use ordinance and zoning map amendments. The Planning Board meets with the City Council every third Tuesday each month at 7:00 P.M., and at other times on a called basis. Public hearings are held in the Council Chambers; business meetings are held in the West End Conference Room, City Hall.  

Sanford/Lee County Partnership for Prosperity DBA Sanford Area Growth Alliance (formerly Lee County Economic Development Corporation)-Engages in activities to expand and diversify the economic base of Lee County and raise overall prosperity through comprehensive economic, infrastructure, and workforce development strategies that support existing businesses and encourage new business recruitment. A regular annual meeting of the Board of Directors will be held at the first meeting of the fiscal year in January. The Board of Directors will hold a regular monthly meeting. Special meetings may be called by or at the request of the Chairman at any place within Lee County. Notice of any special meeting of the Board of Directors will be given at least two (2) days prior.  

Sanford Housing Authority- Provides safe, sanitary, and affordable housing to the low-income population of the City of Sanford and County of Lee through rental of dwellings owned by the Authority and through Section 8 Housing. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 6:00 PM at the main office, 1000 Carthage Street, Sanford.

City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month in City Hall's Council Chambers at 7:00pm.

Law & Finance meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month in City Hall's Council Chambers at 7:00pm.

All Council meetings are aired on Channel 191, the city's government access channel, on Charter Communications for one week following the meeting at 3pm, 6pm, & 10pm.
